A recent and welcome addition to the neighborhood is The Pitch & Fork, a new American tavern from Jacques Ouari, the owner of Jacques 1534 in NoLIta. The brasserie opened in late June, and it pulls European influences–think steak au poivre and moules frites–as well as a thorough cocktail list into the mix. We’d pair their excellent Schaller & Weber Choucroute platter with a French 75 (Hendrick’s gin, lemon juice, and champagne) for the lady and a Delirium Tremens for the gentleman, but don’t be fooled into thinking this place is only good for a date, or for the traditional. True, the abundant dark wood, long black banquette, and antique look of the wallpaper gives The Pitch & Fork an old-fashioned, saloon-style feel, but the menu is up-to-date, and the food is fresh. Try it out for yourself at 1606 First Ave (between 83rd and 84th).
